Lockout Tagout

MB Regulation 217 / 2006 states:

16.14(1)  …when a machine is serviced, repaired, tested, cleaned, maintained or adjusted, an employer must ensure that no worker performs work on the machine until it has come to a complete stop and the worker performing work on the machine has:

a) locked out the machine and removed and rendered safe any hazardous condition; or

b) otherwise rendered the machine inoperative in a manner that prevents reactivation…

IDENTIFY – SHUT OFF – DEACTIVATE – LOCKOUT – TAG-OUT – TEST

Did you know…

  • Safe work procedures must be developed and implemented for lockout, especially when manufacturer’s specifications require a machine to remain operational, or a lock is not reasonably practicable;

  • As of February 1, 2008, a physical lockout system must be in place when reasonably practicable, in addition to a tag-out system;

  • For instances where more than one employee is working on machinery, more than one lock is required;

  • Only the person who installed a lock can remove a lock – there shall only be one key for each lock.
