MB Regulation Section 6.7 requires an employer to provide high visibility safety apparel meeting CSA Standard Z96 – 02 to employees who may be injured by a moving vehicle and / or powered mobile equipment, or if the worker is not visible to others due to environmental or other work conditions in the workplace or at a worksite.
CSA Standard Z96 – 02 lists three high-visibility apparel classes, dependent on the nature of work being performed and the body coverage required:
- Class 1 – lower visibility requirements for workers who are well separated from traffic i.e. vehicle / equipment speeds below 40 km / h, parking lot, and warehouse environments. Consists of a basic harness or bands over the shoulders, encircling the waist.
- Class 2 – medium visibility requirements for workers who are on / near roadways i.e. traffic 40 – 80 km / h, higher traffic / more congestion, urban / suburban areas with road construction, utility and survey crews, school crossing guards, EMS workers, traffic police. Consists of full coverage of the upper torso (front, back, sides, over the shoulders).
- Class 3 – highest visibility requirements for workers in high-risk situations. Must be visible through a full range of body motions from at least 390 m i.e. traffic above 80 km / h, workers on highways / freeways including road construction and maintenance, utility and survey crews, and EMS workers. Same requirements of Class 2 with the addition of bands that encircle both arms and both legs.
