Working Alone or in Isolation
MB Regulation 217 / 2006, Part 9
There are many instances, especially with sub-contractors, in which workers are required to work under the following conditions:
- after hours;
- traveling to or from a job location, sometimes in a different town or city;
- performing service work, or;
- unsupervised
MB Regulation 217 / 2006 defines working alone as:
The performance of any work function by a worker who:
a) is the only worker for that employer at that workplace at any time; and
b)is not directly supervised by the employer, or another person designated as a supervisor by the employer, at any time.
It is the employer’s responsibility to identify and control any identified risks to workers working alone by means of safe work procedures, training, and enforcement. Safe work procedures must include an effective means of communication, a system of regular contact with the worker, and any necessary emergency supplies. It is also the employer’s responsibility to post this policy / procedure in a visible location to ensure understanding.
Do you have a plan in place???
Things to remember when creating and implementing your Working Alone Plan:
- Complete a pre-job hazard assessment. Determine medical facilities and write down important phone numbers ahead of time;
- Establish a system of contact (cell phone, radio, satellite phone)
- Determine start and end time of the task as well as a way of documenting the time of check-in (log book, working alone form)
- Establish emergency procedures in case your check-in system fails – practice it
- If traveling, prepare for extreme weather or vehicle malfunctions. Maintain your vehicle!!!
- Never enter a situation or worksite that you don’t feel comfortable in – trust your gut!
