Holiday Safety

Happy Holidays from your CSAM!

The holiday season is upon us again!  Christmas is a wonderful time of year, filled with family, friends, parties, tree decorating, snowman building, ice skating, caroling, and great food!

Most people take time off from the workplace during the Christmas season to spend time with their loved ones.  Unfortunately, safety often takes time off too.  All too often people forget that there are risks associated with jobs that take place at home.  Hanging Christmas lights and outdoor decorations, lighting a fire in the fireplace, setting up the tree, and shoveling snow are all examples of tasks that should be performed carefully.

Some tips to consider this year while enjoying the festivities:

  • If using a real tree, choose a fresh one and water it daily to prevent drying out;
  • Purchase age-appropriate decorations and trimmings if you have children (sharp, breakable ornaments are not recommended);
  • Set your tree up away from high traffic areas to avoid tripping hazards;
  • Have a qualified person check your furnace and venting system, and clean / replace your furnace filter on a regular basis;
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector and be aware of carbon monoxide sources in your home (defective chimneys, fireplaces, portable heaters, garages, etc.);
  • Use sturdy candle holders, and never leave burning candles unattended;
  • Examine all electrical cords prior to using – throw out any frayed cords and those that are cracked or have exposed wiring;
  • Use an appropriate ladder when hanging Christmas lights and decorations outdoors – set up lights early if possible to avoid slippery areas below;
  • Purchase an ergonomically-friendly snow shovel and use proper techniques

Safe thinking shouldn’t end on the jobsite!
