Hearing Conservation and Noise Control

Hearing Conservation Program

Section 12 of MB Regulation 217 / 2006, outlines what components are required in a Hearing Conservation program.  It also details the responsibilities and duties of employers and workers.  The regulation states:

  • Noise exposure assessments must be completed if a workplace is expected to meet or exceed noise levels of 80 dBA;
  • Employers must provide workers with hearing protection if requested when sound levels are between 80 and 85 dBA;
  • It is the employer’s responsibility to implement sound control measures (when practicable) or provide employees with hearing protection when sound levels exceed 85 dBA;
  • Employees must receive training and instruction about the selection, use, and care of their hearing protection.

WHAT CAN YOU DO???

Implement a Hearing Conservation program!  Your policy should outline what measures you will take in order to assess your work environments.  Once sound levels have been assessed, the control measures should be clearly outlined and communicated to all workers.  Book your annual baseline test, and take samples of sound levels in your work space (update every 1 to 3 years, or as work environments change).  CSAM has a dosimeter available for employers to use at no charge.  Most importantly, TRAIN your employees!  You only have one chance to protect your hearing!
