Industrial Protective Headwear
CSA Standard Z94.1 – 05
Performance, Selection, Care and Use
The Workplace Safety and Health Regulation, Section 6.11(1) requires any worker on a construction project site to wear protective headwear (hard hats) in accordance with CSA Standard Z94.1 – 05 (Industrial Protective Headwear Performance, Selection, Care and Use).
With our hectic summer coming to an end, we are being faced with many chilly mornings and cool, autumn winds. This tends to bring forth a lot of questions and concerns from workers trying to keep warm and work safe!
The CSA Standard referenced under MB Regulation 217 / 2006 states that acceptable hard hat accessories include:
- winter liners;
- bandanas;
- welder’s caps;
- hair nets, and;
- non-metallic stickers ½ inch above the brim
Baseball caps and hooded sweatshirts are NOT acceptable as they interfere with the suspension system of the hard hat.
What’s your best bet???
Wear a winter liner that has been approved for the hard hats required on your job site. If you must wear a hooded sweatshirt, pull it over the top of your hard hat. Ensure that it doesn’t pull down on the hard hat or impair your vision. This will help to make sure that your suspension isn’t compromised and your hard hat keeps you safe!
Please refer to the mentioned CSA Standard or SAFEWork Bulletin #199 – Protective Headwear on Construction Project Sites for more information.
