Bigger and better cranes have improved efficiency on construction sites but have also increased the potential for fatalities, injuries, and property damage. This DVD alerts operators, riggers, and other trades to hazards in crane operating areas. Topics include overhead powerlines, proximity of other equipment, ground conditions, and proper use of outriggers. Of special interest is the section on load weights and crane capacities.
HOISTS, WINCHES AND RELATED DEVICES
Time: 20 minutes DVD #120
It is not always practical for riggers to use a crane. When the load is too small or headroom is limited, various devices are available to facilitate safe lifting. This DVD focuses on chain hoists, come-alongs, grip hoists, electrically powered hoists, trolleys and powered winches (tuggers). Emphasis falls on choosing proper anchorage points and the effect of pulling direction and load. These and other factors are further illustrated in the instructor’s notes.
INTERNATIONAL HAND SIGNALS
Time: 7 minutes DVD #130
This DVD presents the hand signals required for communication between signallers and operator. In each case the signal is demonstrated from the operator’s viewpoint and the corresponding crane action is shown. The instructor’s notes include an illustrated guide to the signals and further particulars on requirements for signal persons.
JACKS, ROLLERS AND RELATED DEVICES
