By law, an employer is required to notify the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Branch of a serious incident by the fastest means of communication available. Serious Incident Alerts include descriptions of the actual serious incidents reported to WSH Branch and are provided to raise awareness and initiate preventative actions as appropriate.
The following FIVE incidents occurred on Manitoba construction projects in January 2024:
Collapse of falsework. In accordance with Part 29.6 of the Manitoba Regulation, all falsework must be capable of supporting any load that will be or is likely to be imposed on them. The IHSA has developed a toolbox talk on safe processes for placing concrete using formwork.
A worker was gluing down a floor when their foot slipped on a truss, causing them to fall. The Manitoba Regulation Part 4.5 outlines the safe work requirements where slip and trip hazards are present. CSAM has developed a toolbox talk for Winter Slips and Trips, which can be found here.
A worker was stepping out of a truck in a garage bay when they slipped and fell on some water. A properly completed workplace inspection or hazard assessment reviewing all aspects of the work area or job-specific tasks. Part 2.4 of the Manitoba Regulation outlines the requirement for frequent inspections of all workplace procedures and areas. While doing line maintenance at the plant, the workers went to flush the line with the cleaning solution and it splashed back onto a worker. Part 6.13 describes the requirement for proper eye and face protection when working around liquids or other materials that can cause injury. A worker made electrical contact with the side of an outlet from a 240V panel. Electrical hazards are some of the most hazardous. Part 38 of the Manitoba Regulation guides workers through the safety requirements of working with electrical power. Part 38.7 describes the employer ensuring that workers are protected from doing work that may cause contact with energized equipment.
