By law, an employer is required to notify the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Branch of a serious incident by the fastest means of communication available. Serious Incident Alerts include descriptions of the actual serious incidents reported to WSH Branch and are provided to raise awareness and initiate preventative actions as appropriate.
The following ONE incident occurred on Manitoba construction projects in August 2023:
A worker was setting up scaffolding and missed one of the sill plates. As the worker was climbing the scaffolding, one side sunk into a flowerbed causing the worker to lose balance and fall approximately 5 feet. An employer must ensure that scaffolds are installed, used, maintained, and dismantled in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. Additionally, all workers must be trained in the safe use of the scaffold they are expected to work on. For more information on scaffolding check out our Toolbox Talk on Scaffold Basics.
