By law, an employer is required to notify the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Branch of a serious incident by the means of communication available. Serious Incident Alerts include descriptions of the actual serious incidents reported to WSH Branch and are provided to raise awareness and initiate preventative actions as appropriate.
The following four incidents occurred on Manitoba construction projects in November 2022:
- A worker fell approximately 12 feet while working on a roof with no fall protection. When a worker is a risk of falling three metres or more, the law requires fall protection to be used. Ensure workers know these requirements — register for Working at Heights at CSAM: THE Safety Conference.
- Workers were setting up a gas pump in a building with diesel heaters, using a central monitor in place instead of individual gas monitors. The monitor alarms activated, and workers stopped. They reassessed and returned to work, and shortly after showed signs of CO poisoning. Workplaces must be well-ventilated with appropriate air quality. Check our toolbox talk on temporary heat safety for more tips.
- A worker was assaulted by two individuals in a bathroom. Employers must assess the risk of violence in the workplace and create and implement a violence prevention policy. Workers must be trained in these policies. Review SAFE Work's Safety Swap on violence in the workplace.
- A company truck hit a patch of ice, causing the truck to roll into the ditch. Workers should always drive to the conditions and be aware of surroundings. Check out our tips for driving safely in winter weather.
